Hello all,
It's that time of the year. Our Annual Award's Night and AGM! Save the Date! September 19th at Ruban's house from 4pm-8:30pm. Our Award's Night is to award swimmers of their achievements this past summer season. It is a great time to gather together to celebrate with one another and catch up after all these weeks since our last practice. Swimmers will receive awards for their best times and their big goals they have reached this past season. Our Annual General Meeting will take place during this night also. We most encourage all parents to attend. There will also be a potluck. Please bring a main dish and a dessert to share with everyone! Date : Saturday, September 19th (4:00pm-8:30pm) I hope to see everyone there! All I can say is WOW! I am almost speechless on how proud and happy I am from the efforts of you swimmers the weekend. You guys did an amazing job! Your parents also did one amazing job as well.
Here are some statistics on our meet that makes me so excited for the years to come. The Surrey Sea Lions are making a comeback and Fraser South knows that. First off, out of the 43 swimmers we have in our team (if I counted correctly) we had 37 of them show up and participate in the meet. That is an 86% turn out which is just amazing. I am hoping that this trend continues and we can get an even higher percentage for next year. Maybe get above 90%???? I also went back and checked the amount of swimmers that have came to our home meet since 2012 and we had more swimmer this weekend then we have had in the past three years combined. As well as more than doubling the 15 from last year. So great job Sea Lions. We are getting into our peak competition time of the season. This week will still be tough for my kids but next week we will start to taper off going into regionals. I remind the swimmers (as well as parents) that you need to be getting to bed early over the next two weeks. Your sleep in very important for your resting and your energy levels going into these competitions. I also know it is summer and you still want to do lots of activities but try to refrain from too many tiring activities. Tell your parents that this is the one time of the year that you can sit in front of the tv, Coach Brandon says so. However don't spend the entire day do some sort of outside activity that is light in demand. We all need our fresh air. Lastly what I want to touch on is about the events at regionals. As a coach I am greedy and I want as many kids as possible to be going to provincials. So us coaches are looking online at the standings of the region and province and deciding who will be swimming what and who will be put on a relay. Remember that you swimmers and parents can suggest events to us but we have the final say. We are the coaches and we know what is best for the swimmers. As Robby would say Sea Lions lets here you Roar!! Coach Brandon All over the country from Emily Overholt of Canada and Thiago Periera of Brazil at the Pan Am Games in Toronto to the WRASA BCSSA swim meet at the Fleetwood Pool, and the CBSC meet in crescent beach, athletes were engaged in non simultaneous touch of the wall in their turns the past week.
So, with our own Cloverdale/Surrey meet just a few days away, I want make sure that in addition to clocking best times and giving it your all ……..that you approach your race with a laser focus on correct technique too! We will go over this in practice as we move into the last few meets of the year so it becomes second nature. When not in the water you might watch our Canadian athletes swimming on you tube, you can even read the BCSSA rules if that helps. The rules state: Breast Stroke and Butterfly: “Separation of hands in butterfly and breaststroke, the touch in both strokes must be made with both hands simultaneous.” In backstroke there are 2 ways to turn, the first is to touch the wall with 1 hand while on your back, turn around, and push off on your back. The second way is to flip on to your front, and flip immediately with a continuous motion, and then push off on your back. I recommend that swimmers push off 2-3 feet deep and do 8-10 worm kicks on their back while blowing bubbles. In front crawl or freestyle I recommend a flip turn with 8-10 underwater dolphin kicks in streamline, any turn is legal as long as the wall is touched. It was so much fun to watch everyone swimming last weekend at WRASA and I know the best is yet to come. Go Sea Lions Go! As the warm weather continues our athletes continue to dazzle at development meets with best times.
The recorded results from 7,8,15 in Richmond were awesome for all our swimmers. We welcomed one new athlete and their family this week into swim racing which was fun for all of us. Way to go Jayron. Next week we will be working on Kick, Turns and Butterfly. We will also be doing some challenges next week. We need to focus on clean, legal strokes. I really need all my swimmers to sign up for the Crescent Beach B meet on July 22 at McBride and Wickson in Crescent Beach. The meet starts at 1 pm, I can drive anyone who doesn’t have a ride. I also need all my swimmers to sign up for the Surrey Sea Lions meet on July 25-26 at Bear Creek Pool. See you all at the Bottle Drive on Saturday. Hey Sea Lions,
I just finished doing the entries for the WRASA and we have the most kids going to this meet than all the other ones this year so far. That makes me super happy and proud. It means you are enjoying swimming and helps us coaches know you are improving, So congrats. Good job to Robby and Ralph for promoting the swim meets as well. That being said our home meet is coming up very fast and I would love to see even more kids going to that one than the WRASA one. Reminder that this week our practice times have changed and we now begin drylands at 4:30 and in the water at 5:00. I know that us coaches sound like a broken record but you all need to be wearing sun screen and have at least one water bottle. I have told my group to have one water bottle and one gatorade bottle for this week especially. I haven't been to Surrey this past weekend but I know a lot of the lower mainland area is very smoky. So I do want to make sure that we stay healthy. If you have asthma or other breathing problems please let the coaches know and keep your puffer beside the pool. Lastly, for my group, we are getting very close to regionals and I want to sit down with my kids before or after practice and talk about their expectations they have for regionals and provincials and if they can even go to either. (Reminder must attend regionals to got provincials). There will be a sign up sheet on the door later this week for my group. If you are in Robby's or Ralph's group and want to do the same approach them and I am sure they will be fine with it. Cheers for now Head Coach Brandon Hey guys! First of all, the past few meets that we had was absolute outstanding I saw so much improvement from all your swims even your attitude as we go through our practices. There's alot more of meets that we have to do but especially our surrey sea lions/cloverdale tritons meet I expect everyone to swim. I want you guys to show how much you have improved and how much fun swimming is. Remember our streamline off every wall and big arm circles everytime we do our frontcrawl. Let's keep our hardwork and enthusiasm high so we can be as great as we wanted to be and still don't forget our water bottles and sunscreen.
Thank you athletes for all your hard work and to the parents for making sure they arrive on time every day. The pace the athletes can keep up now is a real testament to their youthful endurance. The focus for our group throughout the season will continue to be on technique with a focus on good kick. Completing kick sets correctly is at the top of our list of priorities. Also, everyday, we talk about our shark fin arms for freestyle. It is important that we continue these drills for technique in this early stage so that as the athletes grow they are race ready with both good technique and endurance.
Going forward into these next few weeks I would like to see our whole group sign up and be ready to attend to the July 22 Crescent Beach B meet. If we need to car pool let’s get that organized amongst the families. The other big commitment I would like to ask our group is to sign up now for our own meet, Cloverdale Triton/Surrey Sea Lions A/B meet on July 25 and 26. Athletes we can learn some cheers together and watch our team mates swim to support the whole team. Parents don’t be shy about pitching in too for the most important weekend for our club in terms of fundraising and hosting. Your confidence and energy is infectious and with consistent practice you can trust there are some best times coming for our group this year! Bring your water, your sunscreen, and your good spirit and see you at the pool. Remember, we are going to do good kick sets everyday now – and make sure you sign up for those meets if you haven’t already. Go Sea Lions! Happy belated Fathers Day to all father!
Wow, the season is flying by, and what a great start to the season! For being a small club we are making a very big impact. Lots of best times in the last three meets and a great improvement in technique. Please remember to arrive to practices and swim meets on time and bring a water bottle. This coming Monday we have a pot luck and hope to see all you there! There is no meets for the next three weekends however I will be posting sign ups for both wrasa and our meet! Please sign up. Let's get the biggest turn out of kids. Lastly, please let both me and your respective coaches of any holidays that are arising. As regionals approaches we need to be aware of this to make sure we can succeed at regionals and get your wonderful children qualified for provincials. Happy Canada Day! 🇨🇦 Coach Brandon Hey guys! Im so happy that I get to be your coach for the whole summer. I may be pushing you guys a little bit harder than usual but I want you guys to be the swimmers you want to be. You guys have so much potential to be high class swimmers one day. Few key reminders when we do our practices is that always do you best, arrive on time and best of all have FUN. I hope to have a fun and memorable summer with you guys and always bring water and put on sunscreen when we do our practices.
